H2U Hydrogen Valley Zakarpattia: A Certified Leap Forward in Ukraine’s Energy Transition
Hydrogen Ukraine is set to implement a significant project for green hydrogen production in the Zakarpattia region. The plant is initially designed with an electrolyzer capacity of 100 MW, scalable up to 1,500 MW, and is expected to produce up to 100,000 tons of hydrogen annually. This project is a key element of the transborder Slovak-Ukrainian hydrogen valley, with a potential off-taker being the metallurgical plant in Košice, Slovakia.
In November 2023, the Zakarpattia project was certified by Mission Innovation and the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, thereby making it accessible on the Global Hydrogen Valley Platform. This certification underscores the project’s adherence to high standards and its global significance in hydrogen energy.
The Platform currently showcases 89 projects from 34 countries, including two notable projects from Ukraine, developed by Hydrogen Ukraine. The first of these projects to receive certification was a hydrogen project near Reni in the Odesa region, reinforcing Ukraine’s standing in the global hydrogen energy sector.
The European Commission has recently approved the list of Projects of Common Interest (PCI), which, for the first time, includes projects in hydrogen energy, featuring the Central European Hydrogen Corridor. The Zakarpattia project, positioned as Ukraine’s potential inaugural hydrogen exporter, is slated to commence hydrogen transportation following the reconstruction of a pipeline that connects Ukraine with Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Austria, and Germany. This development is pivotal in integrating Ukraine into the European energy market.
