Ukraine and the Czech Republic are choosing the path towards a green energy future through collaboration in the field of hydrogen

Hydrogen Ukraine continues to actively work on projects aimed at the development of hydrogen energy.

An important meeting between representatives of Ukraine and the Czech Republic took place in Kyiv on the 15th of November, 2023, where prospects of cooperation within the Central European Hydrogen Corridor initiative were discussed. This initiative envisions the creation of a hydrogen “highway” for transporting hydrogen from Ukraine’s main production zones through Slovakia and the Czech Republic to hydrogen demand zones in Germany.

Currently, significant attention is being focused on the development of similar hydrogen pipeline networks in various parts of the world. This movement is a crucial step in achieving global goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and transitioning to low-carbon energy. Some of the most important and promising projects include:

Gulf-to-Europe Hydrogen Pipeline: This project aims to connect the Persian Gulf and Europe through a hydrogen pipeline passing through Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and the Mediterranean Sea.

H2Med Project: This project involves transporting green hydrogen produced in Spain and Portugal to countries in Northwestern Europe, especially Germany.

Hydrogen Backbone Link by Net Zero Technology Centre: This project focuses on the development of a hydrogen pipeline between Scotland and Europe.

Nordic-Baltic Hydrogen Corridor: This project envisions the transportation of hydrogen from Finland through Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Poland to Germany.

Given the global competition and similar initiatives in other parts of the EU and neighboring countries, it is crucial to initiate active cooperation between Ukraine, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Germany to implement the Central European Hydrogen Corridor initiative and move towards practical steps. Today’s meeting was dedicated to discussing further actions and future plans. Together with the Czech delegation, representatives of NET4GAS, and Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine, among other key participants, we actively discussed technical, economic, and environmental aspects. The green hydrogen production project being developed by Hydrogen Ukraine in Zakarpattia may become a pilot and a key contribution to this very important initiative.

The future success of this joint project can open up new horizons for both countries in renewable energy and contribute to the fight against climate change.

Hydrogen Ukraine is immensely grateful to the Ukrainian Hydrogen Council for providing an invaluable platform for discussing these vital initiatives.
